Bongani Orphan Care Project is UCCSA Zimbabwe Synod’s response to the prevalence of Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) in her areas of operation. The programme exists in all the regions and reaches the OVCs through Regional Coordinators who work with other volunteer congregants dotted all over each region.
Bongani was established on 1 December 1998.The programme came into existence following the Zimbabwe Christian Council (ZCC) meeting which
was attended by Rev Sandra Gourdet and Mrs Lessie Phakathi, on behalf of the UCCSA.
The meeting was about orphans in the communities in view of the HIV/
AIDS scourge which was threatening the lives of the parents, leaving behind many child-headed families. In some cases the orphaned children were HIV positive or were already sick
Heads of Churches also met on the same subject of orphans, giving birth to the interdenominational organisation Hope for a Child in Christ (HOCIC). As a member church, UCCSA gave her organisation the name ‘Bongani’, meaning ‘Be thankful’.
